This year, Avans University of Applied Sciences iss the second most sustainable higher education institution in the Netherlands, following Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences. This was revealed by the SustainaBul 2025, the annual sustainability ranking compiled by Studenten voor Morgen (Students for Tomorrow), which assessed 34 universities and universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands.
The SustainaBul was awarded in The Hague on May 23rd during the Groene Peper Festival, which is the biggest event in the Netherlands for sustainability in vocational education (mbo), higher education (hbo), and university (wo). The festival provides the opportunity to network, gain inspiration, and/or exchange knowledge with everyone within these educational target groups on the topic of sustainability.
Educational institutions are assessed on the basis of 11 questions based on the Whole School Approach, and the Groene Peper (Green Pepper) award is presented to the most sustainable educational institution (hbo/wo). With this benchmark, Studenten voor Morgen (Students for Tomorrow) calls for more sustainable education on behalf of more than 40 student organisations in the Netherlands.
The SustainaBul is not an endpoint but a progress marker. The annual assessment offers insights into where institutions stand — and keeps them sharp. Every year, the bar is raised — and that’s exactly the point.
