Exams are almost over and what better way to give us a taste of what is to come after COVID than to end our first year with a fieldwork activity? Last week, ESSET students went out in the field as we explored the ecological outdoors of the Mastbos forest. I think I speak for all of us when I say that it was an amazing experience! The main objective of this activity was to become acquainted with ecology in soil, water and the forest in general as students took samples, identified species and analyzed our findings. With the guidance of our teachers and volunteers and the use of wading suits, tightly meshed nets, and very handy soil drills, we spent a half-day experiencing nature.
My personal favorite of it all was just being able to have the practical experience. I mean, there was also the added bonus of bonding with my peers, in real life. All in all, after a year of studying in this program, I felt sure about my decision to study environmental sciences while doing this fieldwork activity.
Starting this year knowing that the coronavirus circumstances would have impacted the way of learning, I think many of us were unsure of what to expect going into our second year. However, after conducting this fieldwork activity I am think that we are just ready for what the upcoming school year has to offer.
