According to Burning Glass Technologies, the number of environmental science degrees awarded has increased by 24% since 2016.However solving complected issues such as climate change doesn’t have an easy fix, but starting with a degree in environmental science is a start.

Today’s graduates are finding more diverse career opportunities, showing a growing interest in sustainability across different fields. Government organizations, in particular, have become top employers for environmental science majors, even more so than architectural and engineering firms. This change is likely due to the public’s increasing demand for environmental and health protections, which has influenced new laws and government actions.

Environmental action through career choices

A Deloitte survey found that almost all Gen Zs and millennials crave purpose-driven work and aren’t shy about rejecting jobs that clash with their values. They’re ready to reject employers or tasks that harm the environment or promote inequality. For these generations, environmental sustainability is a top priority. It’s a personal issue that weighs heavily on them, with about 69% saying they’ve felt anxious about climate change in the past month.

Gen z And Gen alpha trends influence on choices

In just about four years, Gen Alpha will start diving into their university study choices. This generation are hyper aware of the world around them, even more so than Gen Z. What sets Gen Alpha apart is their incredible hope for the future. And why not? They’ve been swiping on smartphones since before they could talk !

Trends such as “deinfluencing“and “Eco-wakening” has became the norm between gen z and gen alpha, De-influencing aims to influence people buying behavior on things they don’t need to buy, while Eco-wakening is choosing more environmental friendly products and services. these trends have made even brands change their marketing strategies and choices.

Interestingly, Gen X which includes the baby boomers are also more sustainably aware. Since 2019, their preference for sustainable brands has jumped by 24%, and they’re 42% more willing to pay extra for eco-friendly products
